Mies van Berlo | Lawyer

Education

Mies van Berlo studied Liberal Arts and Sciences and Law at Tilburg University. He subsequently obtained a Master’s degree in Criminal Law, cum laude, from Utrecht University, specialising in forensic psychiatry and criminal law. As a solicitor, he undertook, amongst other things, the course ‘Criminal Evidence Law from a Defence Perspective’ at VU University Amsterdam.

Experience

Mies has been a solicitor since 2022. Before joining Kuyp Baar Advocaten, he worked at the renowned Baumgardt Strafcassatie Advocatuur in Rotterdam. There, he dealt with both regular criminal cases before district courts and courts of appeal, but above all with appeal proceedings before the Supreme Court. His extensive experience in appeal proceedings is also evident from a large number of published judgments in which he acted as an appeal lawyer.

Even whilst still a student, Mies gained experience in various aspects of the criminal justice system. Among other things, he was a student assistant at the Department of Criminal Law at Tilburg University, where he conducted academic research for Prof. Dr Tijs Kooijmans, and worked as an external clerk at the Zeeland-West-Brabant District Court.

At Kuyp Baar Advocaten, Mies handles both criminal cases at first instance and appeal cases, and is part of our specialist appeal practice.
